One hundred years after Columbus' first voyage to America, Mercator completed his world atlas, one which embodied Europe's geographical conception of the world in an age of colonialism. Since then, thousands of atlases have been published. They differ in many respects from Mercator's, but all present a Eurocentric view of the world.
The Peters World Atlas corrects our misconceptions of the geography of the planet, representing all countries at the same scale. Based on the revolutionary Peters Projection, each double-page spread shows one-sixtieth of the earth's surface. The maps demonstrate just how tall and elegant South America and Africa are, while Britain is revealed to be half the size of Madagascar.

The Peters World Atlas presents an astronaut's eye view, capturing the beauty and variety of the surface of the earth. Its use of colour and relief is intuitive, so jungles are green, deserts are brown, and mountains appear to bulge out of the page. Out of print for five years, this atlas has now been revised and updated by New Internationalist.
